Vegas and Venturi Reconsidered

Posted by amy on July 15th, 2010

It’s usually with a mix of awe and suspicion that visitors look at the architecture in Las Vegas. There are many who are commenting on the changes to the strip in the past 30 years, and how it’s become an entirely different place. However, there seem to be elements in all the arguments that do indeed reflect the notions set forth by Robert Venturi , with Izenour and Brown, in 1972. It is certainly a postmodern city , and it does become more so every year, but there are suggestions everywhere that point out how this has actually always been true.

Whether looking at the new facades that make reference to another place and another monument, or enjoying the Vegas that was in the downtown strip, it’s a place that looks like other places. And it does this to such an extent, that eventually, it can only look like itself. Guests from out of town, on their first night at their favorite hotel in Las Vegas , see difference and similarities in one glance. It looks like it used to, or what the photos have suggested in the imagination, and yet it is still a new place altogether. It creates itself at every moment, and it’s been that way for a long time.

Comedy and Nightclubs in Miami

Posted by amy on July 4th, 2010

While many of Southern Florida’s cities are incredibly popular with tourists and well known for their beauty, beaches and cultural attractions, Miami is probably the most famous and loved of them all. It has been featured in more pop culture genres than any of the others, though Key West might put up an argument for its alleged association to Jimmy Buffet’s song Margaritaville. So, with all of the national attention and interest Miami receives it is no wonder that so many people choose to vacation there every year.

The nightclub scene in Miami is one of its most famous features and is one of the favorite elements of the city for many of the guests in a Miami spa resort . The clubs represent a diverse music scene and there are numerous live music venues as well as major dance clubs where some of the nation’s top djs let it spin. In addition to the music oriented night clubs there are other venues that are famous for comedy and other performance genres. Sports bars are another popular club theme and not all of them are focused on supporting the Dolphins, Heat or Marlins, though of course the bottom line is that they do.

Comedy clubs in Miami range from those that host professional comedians to the rising star venues and sketch comedy clubs. Others host competitions and open mic nights. One of the top comedy venues in Miami is the Improv Comedy Club . Some of the most famous stand up comedians in the world have performed there and continue to do so. The club offers dinner and comedy shows and more often than night you will find a star in the line up. Legends in the field, such as Robin Williams , Steve Martin and Jerry Seinfeld among others have taken the stage in this club. In addition to great dinner shows, the Improv also offers a series of classes for aspiring comedians.

Positive Affirmations Determine Your Success

Posted by amy on June 28th, 2010

Many professionals such as those at any of the Southwestern Company affiliate companies can tell you that there really is something to be said for affirmations . They may not practice them, but it can be something that they do once in a while, when they remember it, and it always makes a difference. The thing about affirmations is that they shape the way you are prepared to look at the world. If you start out the day telling the world that you love it — and believe that statement, then it is going to take something pretty big to pull you down from that kind of high.

The thing is that you use affirmations every day without knowing it. It is practicing positive affirmations that take hard work, dedication, and help get you to the top of your game. If you wake up every morning saying that you can do anything better than everyone else, and you take the time to learn the necessary skills, and you study all the right things, and you work hard toward your goals, you are going to do it. Here is the key though. If you wake up in the morning and tell yourself that you suck, you can’t do anything right, you don’t know what you are doing, etc., then you aren’t even going to want to read the books, learn the skills, or work hard, because what is the point when you already can’t do anything right. It is all in your attitude , and the attitude you put yourself in.

The benefits of being able to tell yourself that you love everything, and that you can do anything, and believe it when you say it can be seen the next time someone puts you down for something. Instead of worrying about it, meditate and do some affirmations. Tell yourself that you can do well, that you are doing well, that you are great. Say it until you believe it and see how you feel. You won’t be in as bad of a mood any longer. This is important to sales people of all types, because they are constantly facing rejection. A company that hires on people who can keep this good attitude and holds onto those people not only will be around for a long time, but might even win some awards like Southwestern Company did.

Hong Kong Pink Dolphins and Harbor Cruises

Posted by amy on June 24th, 2010

Floating out onto the waters of Hong Kong has many different experiences. Some time in the 1990′s the Dolphins showed up in the water as pink instead of a blue grey. There is a tour that will take you out to see these Dolphins and you will be amazed at how pink they really are. There is a company called Hong Kong Dolphinwatch that has a good sight success rate. So far, scientists don’t know why these beautiful mammals are pink. There is a theory that they lost their natural camouflage because they don’t have the threat of natural predators. In other words, there are not sharks in these waters. This is a fantastic sight to see if you get the chance to grab a tour. If it is a last minute idea you may want to check with your Hong Kong hotel for more information and maybe some reservations.

Another really experience with the harbor is to have dinner and then take a night cruise. There is a tour that starts with an excellent dinner at the Revolving 66 Restaurant and then ends up on a night cruise of the harbor. This is an amazing experience. The restaurant is located on the 62ND floor of the cities tallest building. They have a great buffet dinner with all kinds of foods available. As one is eating dinner they can see the whole city make its transition from bright shinny day, into soft evening with sunset and then watch it light up with city lights as it moves into night. That is when it is time to head to the harbor. There going to power up the boat, get you a cocktail and then head out for a beautiful drift through the harbor. The city lights are spectacular and on gets twice the fun as they cast their brilliant shadows onto the water. It is just amazing.

Robeson Center in Princeton

Posted by amy on June 22nd, 2010

This is a bit of a riddle. Try to find the common denominator here: the longest-running Shakespeare play on Broadway, and one of the thickest files the FBI has on any U.S. citizen. Paul Robeson plays a central role in both, and both of these things tell part of the story about his life, which almost makes a pretty fair picture. It’s still a biography that’s up for interpretation, and like a great Shakespeare play, that just means that it’s dense and interesting.

Robeson was born in Princeton, and today, the Arts Council here is houses at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts . This is a long way to come, but it also points to a long way still to go, and his inspirations can certainly help point in the right directions.

He was born in Princeton in 1898, studied law at Colombia, where he also did drama on the side. He became a lawyer right around the same time that his side hobby led to a role in one of O’Neill’s plays, and this lead to a whole lot more. When he did play Othello, in the title role, this was the one that got him the kinds of accolades after recognition has set in. People did come to see him perform, enough to warrant a very long run that’s still a record holder to this day.

At the same time, while he was meeting remarkable people in show business, he was making observations that would lead to a life that was very active in social justice. When he went to the Soviet Union with the genius director Eisenstein, he had something of a breakthrough moment, where he felt he was seen as a full human being for the first time. He spent the rest of his life challenging injustices, and struggling for the rights of exiled, oppressed, and native peoples all around the world.

With the legacy he’d left behind, which includes a broken ceiling that allowed other generations that chance to climb, art centers, and centennial celebrations at the University , there’s a big debt the world owes him. Visitors can see the birthplace and the arts center from some of the luxurious hotels Princeton has to offer, knowing this is a place where magnificent changes can happen, and perhaps even more importantly, the city itself recognizes this and celebrates it.

Tips for Visiting the Empire State Building in Manhattan

Posted by amy on June 18th, 2010

When visiting Manhattan there is no place better to go than to the Empire State Building. While the city on its own is pretty cool, looking down on it from that high in the sky is a sight that could take your breath away. If it is your first time there you will want to keep a few things in mind before beginning your journey out of one of the boutique Manhattan hotels on your way to see this magnificent sight.

1. Distance
Consider the distance between where you are and where the building is. Know how you will get there and back. There are a number of subways, trains, buses, cabs and other ways to travel in this city. If you are taking a bus it is important to know the schedule of the bus you will need to get there and back.

2. Weather
The view is best when it is clear. It can get fairly foggy up there if clouds have rolled in. Make sure you dress for the weather in Manhattan because whatever is being felt on the ground is probably more intense on the balconies. If it is cold, it will only get colder up there and you should bundle up. If it is warm, the sun is closer and can feel hotter up there, so wear some extra sunscreen and a hat or something.

3. Security Check
There is a security check to get into the building. There aren’t allowed any glass bottles, or tripods. Camcorders are allowed however. There is no baggage check so what you take in you will need to carry around yourself. They ask that people do not bring full luggage into the building but rather just bring small carry on sized luggage such as a back pack, purse, fanny pack or other small easily handled bags.

4. Sunset
There are of course two ways you can see the city. In the daylight or at night. Daytime provides better ideas of streets, buildings landmarks and other things that are helpful for the new tourist. On the other hand nighttime gives the excitement of the lights of the city. While you may have to wait in longer lines because other people will have the same idea, the best time to get there is at sunset or just before. Get your bearings before the sun goes down, plan out the next day’s travels, and then watch as lights all over the city start to come on and the natural lights start to go away.

Tempe Little Theatre and Summer in Phoenix

Posted by amy on June 15th, 2010

Phoenix, Arizona, in the summer seems an unlikely time to make plans for a desert vacation; after all, the temperatures from late May and into September regularly hit over a hundred degrees; in June and July, the thermometer can climb without too much trouble to 110 degrees and above. Most visitors choose the winter months to visit; in fact, why would anyone ever deliberately arrive for a vacation during the hottest months of the year? Two reasons: 1) You get to find out how to live like a native in a region known for its spectacular sunsets and scenery; and 2) you get to take advantage of seasonal discounts at some of the best hotels in Phoenix .

If you’re staying in such places as the Arizona Biltmore, the Royal Palms Resort & Spa, or the Arizona Grand Resort, you may not have a need to ever leave the hotel — one sure way to beat the heat. Staying a few days in a resort and spa, in fact, is one way the locals find a way to lighten the cost of a vacation and get away from the everyday world.

You’ll find, too, that in the summer, Phoenicians tend to spend a good deal of time indoors during the day, but come out to enjoy the Valley of the Sun once the sun has, in fact, gone away. Check out the local theater, such as Tempe Little Theatre near the campus of Arizona State University.

Tempe Little Theatre or (TLT) presents this summer the Charles Busch comedy, “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife.” The community theater has operated since 1971 as a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, usually offering to the public four plays a year, each in a different genre: drama, comedy, musical and mystery. It’s an institution in the Phoenix area, responsible for producing more than 180 plays over nearly four decades.

It’s true that during a Phoenix summer, you shouldn’t leave DVDs or CDs in your car, and you probably shouldn’t try to touch the steering wheel without a towel if the car hasn’t been in the shade or in covered parking, but the discounts and nightlife may well make up for that inconvenience.

Rome’s Myths are Still Alive

Posted by amy on June 10th, 2010

Rome is still one of the old lands. One of the places where myth meets man , living side by side they influence each other. Going from site to site it may be easy to see the beauty, arts and religion that has been a part of this city’s history, for eternity. It is also easy to miss some of the obvious myths that still live in the city today.

Some of the locals will tell you that it isn’t true, others will tell you it is just a way of pulling the legs of new tourists, but all the same the myth has stood the tests of time and the statues have taken on a life of their own. Pasquino is one of the most famous of these. Now it is just a fraction of what it was in the 3rd century but at the time it was a great sculpture of a famous hero. The legend says that this sculpture as well as others around the city speak to the leaders for the people of Rome. It is not uncommon to see little pieces of paper with small poems mocking the politicians and the rich hung around the neck of this sculpture. Various politicians have tried to stop the speaking sculptures, one Pope went as far as to threaten to throw the statue in the ocean and another one issued an order that anyone caught putting one of these notes around the sculpture’s neck would be punished with death. It hasn’t just been leaders living in Rome that this sculpture has spoken out against either. The sculptures had been mostly quiet for a period until Hitler stayed in a Rome hotel and suddenly there were a number of items hung around the necks of the sculptures to show the people’s displeasure with him and his actions.

Even now if you walk down the streets search out these popular speaking sculptures. You may find something out about the politicians that even the local gossip magazines are not willing to publish.
