Home Safes Provide Security
The main purpose of a safe is to protect its contents. It is that simple. In the case of home safes this usually means protecting money, jewelry and other valuable from thieves. However, it may also mean securing important documents or family mementos from environmental damage, such as earthquakes or fire.
Every safe is usually rated for either theft or fire. It is possible to get safes that are rated highly for both types of protection, but they are usually much more expensive than models that are designed for only one function. Fire ratings will indicate not just how much heat the safe can withstand but also offer guarantees about the amount of water damage and physical weight it can resist. So if a house fell in on itself it wouldn’t matter to the safe if it was due to fire, earthquake or other disaster.
Theft ratings usually take into account two different features. The first is how resistant the lock is to being broken. Thieves may be able to figure out a combination, trick a biometric lock, or simply physically break off the lock. The second way that thieves will attack a safe is by attempting to cut their way into the walls or door. This process may take longer than picking the lock and may require specialized equipment. Understanding the potential risk of burglary will determine what theft rating is appropriate to protect a given home.
Cut Energy Costs with Blinds
The heat of summer is fast approaching for those who live in much of the United States. With it will come soaring energy bills, as air conditioners and swamp coolers go into overdrive. If you’re looking for ways to reduce those costs and save a bit of money, you should think about installing new blinds in all the windows in your home.
That’s right, blinds. Every year homes lose energy through the windows. While some of this can be addressed by making sure that you have properly installed windows with good insulation, you can also install energy efficient blinds and shades to help block out the heat of the sun and keep in the cold air being pumped out by the A/C.
The proper use of blinds is more important than the material or design. A good set of wooden blinds that are custom fit to the window will do a good job of blocking out the sun all day. They can be opened in the cooler part of the day to let hot air escape out of the house. If the window is in the shade, it is okay to keep them open, as natural light will be more cost efficient than having lamps on all day.
The best way to economize your energy bills using blinds is to install an electronic system for opening and closing them. These systems will monitor the temperature and either open or close the blinds to maintain the optimum interior environment.
