Tips for Visiting the Empire State Building in Manhattan
When visiting Manhattan there is no place better to go than to the Empire State Building. While the city on its own is pretty cool, looking down on it from that high in the sky is a sight that could take your breath away. If it is your first time there you will want to keep a few things in mind before beginning your journey out of one of the boutique Manhattan hotels on your way to see this magnificent sight.
1. Distance
Consider the distance between where you are and where the building is. Know how you will get there and back. There are a number of subways, trains, buses, cabs and other ways to travel in this city. If you are taking a bus it is important to know the schedule of the bus you will need to get there and back.
2. Weather
The view is best when it is clear. It can get fairly foggy up there if clouds have rolled in. Make sure you dress for the weather in Manhattan because whatever is being felt on the ground is probably more intense on the balconies. If it is cold, it will only get colder up there and you should bundle up. If it is warm, the sun is closer and can feel hotter up there, so wear some extra sunscreen and a hat or something.
3. Security Check
There is a security check to get into the building. There aren’t allowed any glass bottles, or tripods. Camcorders are allowed however. There is no baggage check so what you take in you will need to carry around yourself. They ask that people do not bring full luggage into the building but rather just bring small carry on sized luggage such as a back pack, purse, fanny pack or other small easily handled bags.
4. Sunset
There are of course two ways you can see the city. In the daylight or at night. Daytime provides better ideas of streets, buildings landmarks and other things that are helpful for the new tourist. On the other hand nighttime gives the excitement of the lights of the city. While you may have to wait in longer lines because other people will have the same idea, the best time to get there is at sunset or just before. Get your bearings before the sun goes down, plan out the next day’s travels, and then watch as lights all over the city start to come on and the natural lights start to go away.
