Tempe Little Theatre and Summer in Phoenix
Phoenix, Arizona, in the summer seems an unlikely time to make plans for a desert vacation; after all, the temperatures from late May and into September regularly hit over a hundred degrees; in June and July, the thermometer can climb without too much trouble to 110 degrees and above. Most visitors choose the winter months to visit; in fact, why would anyone ever deliberately arrive for a vacation during the hottest months of the year? Two reasons: 1) You get to find out how to live like a native in a region known for its spectacular sunsets and scenery; and 2) you get to take advantage of seasonal discounts at some of the best hotels in Phoenix .
If you’re staying in such places as the Arizona Biltmore, the Royal Palms Resort & Spa, or the Arizona Grand Resort, you may not have a need to ever leave the hotel — one sure way to beat the heat. Staying a few days in a resort and spa, in fact, is one way the locals find a way to lighten the cost of a vacation and get away from the everyday world.
You’ll find, too, that in the summer, Phoenicians tend to spend a good deal of time indoors during the day, but come out to enjoy the Valley of the Sun once the sun has, in fact, gone away. Check out the local theater, such as Tempe Little Theatre near the campus of Arizona State University.
Tempe Little Theatre or (TLT) presents this summer the Charles Busch comedy, “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife.” The community theater has operated since 1971 as a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, usually offering to the public four plays a year, each in a different genre: drama, comedy, musical and mystery. It’s an institution in the Phoenix area, responsible for producing more than 180 plays over nearly four decades.
It’s true that during a Phoenix summer, you shouldn’t leave DVDs or CDs in your car, and you probably shouldn’t try to touch the steering wheel without a towel if the car hasn’t been in the shade or in covered parking, but the discounts and nightlife may well make up for that inconvenience.
